Register to Vote!

  • The deadline to register to vote in the Presidential Election is Tuesday, October 11th.
    • Voter registration applications must be postmarked by this date.
  • There are several ways to register to vote:
    • Pick up a postage-paid, pre-addressed voter registration application at the McAllen Public Library Main Branch (available in English and Spanish). Just fill it out, fold and seal, and put in the mail.
    • On the Texas Secretary of State website, request a postage-paid, pre-addressed voter registration application to be mailed to you.
    • On the Texas Secretary of State website, fill out the voter registration application and then print and mail the form.

Election Day

  • Election Day is Tuesday, November 8th.
  • On Election Day, you must vote at the polling location in the precinct where you are registered to vote.
    • If you are registered to vote in Hidalgo County, you can find your polling location here.
    • The law about what kind of identification you need to bring to your polling location has recently changed, to include more options. The most up to date information can be found here.

Early Voting

  • Early voting occurs from Monday, October 24th through Friday, November 4th.
    • During early voting, you can vote at any early voting location in Hidalgo County (including the McAllen Public Library).

Absentee Voting

  • If you are 65 years or older, disabled, in jail but otherwise eligible, or live outside of the county in which you are registered to vote (like if you are a college student), you can still vote by Absentee Ballot.
  • You can print a PDF of the Application for a Ballot by Mail here.  It must be stamped and addressed to the Early Voting Clerk of the county in which you are registered to vote.  In Hidalgo County, this is:

  • You can also send an online request for an Application for a Ballot by Mail to be mailed to you.
  • The Application for a Ballot by Mail must be received (not postmarked) by the Elections Administration office by Friday, October 28th.
  • A ballot will then be mailed to you.
  • Your ballot must be received (not postmarked) by the Elections Administration office by Tuesday, November 8th at 7:00pm.
